This has to be one of the most talked about topics in the industry, and we would be lying to you if we told you that we wouldn’t believe either it if we hadn’t lived it for the last 6 years. Planning your content 30 days ahead of time is possible in under 60 minutes with 3 steps.
The amount of time you waste posting on social media, on the day you want to post it – is roughly 20mins every single time you post. You could actually be spending a lot longer if you are stuck on an idea and searching the internet for inspiration, or having to search for images, or opening up your graphic design program and creating. This wasted time adds up quickly, after 3 days you have wasted as much time as you could have spend planning your posts for the entire month.
Not only is time being wasted, but potentially money is being wasted as well. Here’s why: when you are posting on social media without a specific purpose, or something that can be tied back to your practice’s goals – your efforts could actually be hurting your online reputation and driving traffic away from your brand. You could be doing the exact opposite of what you want to do. Scary right? Super scary.
Before you dive into the 3 steps that are going to help you plan your content, you need to define a clear content strategy for your brand. Answer these questions:
- What issues are important to your brand? What issues are important to your ideal client? – If you are in specialty dental care, your client’s issues may be different from a general dentist.
- Who is your ideal client? What is their age? Where do they live? Do they have a certain income level? What insurance do they need to have?
- What content has/has not worked in the past? – Does video seem to do better?
Once you have these questions answered, you can dive into working toward content planning.
The 3 Steps
Grab a traditional calendar or create spreadsheet in Google to help you move through each step.
Step 1 – Break down the Month into goals for each platform that your practice is on.
Your goals should be realistic, yet shot 10% higher than you normally would or than you did for the previous month. For instance, setting a goal to gain 10,000 likes on Instagram is not as realistic as Increasing your engagement rating on your Instagram posts or gaining 100 likes.
Step 2 – Break down the week into promotions that support your monthly goal.
If one of your goals is to increase awareness for new services your practice is offering or specials, plan out each week theme to revolve around those.
Step 3 – Break down each day into themes that support your goals.
For instance if you are marketing a dental practice, some daily themes could be: Toothbrush Tuesday: posts on this day would include proper ways to brush your teeth, best toothbrushes, Info on how often you need to replace your toothbrush, etc. Smile Saturday: posts on this day could include before and after photos of patients dental treatment, you could start a User Generated Campaign and ask patients to tag your practice sharing a photo of them smiling thanks to your help. Have fun creating original or trending daily themes.
These themes will make it easier to come up with content to create or share.
Important tip – Always remember the 80/20 rule when creating your content. This means 20% of your social media posts should Promotional, a sales pitch or push to get someone in your door, and all of these 20% need a Call to Action on the post. A post demonstrating a dental cleaning ending in a CTA to schedule a routine cleaning is an example of Promotional Content.
The other 80% should be Supportive. This does not mean memes and random quotes, this means education, information or entertainment in the form of posts that support your strategy & goal. Fun facts about dental health, reviews, patient success stories – these are just a few examples of Supportive content.
